After the war, Charles I was trialed for treason, and eventually executed after being found guilty. His son (Charles II) was exiled, and the Monarchy was replaced with a Republic. Eleven years later, the Monarchy system returned as Charles II became king. This came right after the death of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was a commander in the New Model Army as was a large reason they overthrew King Charles during the Civil War.
